The Holes

A moorland course that is condensed into a small area, Horwich Golf Club is tricky and difficult course to score on, and where lots of local knowledge comes into play.

In 1991 9 additional new tees, where introduced adding interest to the course. The course incorporates 3 par threes, 5 par fours and a par 5. Alternative tees on the front and back nine give you a different challenge on every hole.

Hole 1 & 10
A difficult opening hole being a long par 3, normally plays as a long iron. Hit the green and you are off to a good start.

Hole 2 & 11
Out of bounds left and right, your tee shot should be placed left of centre. From here a shortish iron approach is better kept to the left side of the green.

Hole 3 & 12
Possibly the hardest hole on the course. Your tee shot should be long and placed right of centre of the fairway, leaving yourself a very long approach shot to the green. If you come off here with a 4, it’s a great score.

Hole 4 & 13
Long hitters can reach this green, but care should be taken with the out of bounds on the left. If the flag is cut to the right and you finish right it’s a very difficult one to get near.

Hole 5 & 14
A hidden green, closely guarded by bunkers, making it tricky to hit, with a very difficult green to put on.

Hole 6 & 15
From the tee a very tight shot into the fairway. There is out of bounds left and a ditch on the right. A well positioned drive leaves you with a simple pitch. The green has a large sloped apron infront, leave it slightly short and it will roll all the way back to you. Once here the views across several different counties are stunning.

No7 & 16
A longish hole which being downhill doesn’t normally play its length from a straight tee shot. You cant be too bold with your second shot as its out of bounds at the back of the green.

No.8 & 17
Opposite to the 7th, this being uphill, keep your tee shot slightly left. If your not long enough from the tee your second shot becomes more difficult as you can’t see where you are going.

No.9 & 18
A downhill par 3 which is difficult to get the right club. Its not very often that a mis-hit shot here finds the green. Its well guarded by bunkers, getting close is a challenge.
